The sad story of Teklinks, an amazing and now defunct Code Lyoko forum. By Zootboy I am always sad when a good thing ends. Like when a website goes down for good. One of the saddest examples of this for me is the Teklinks forum. It had a long, rocky journey and in the end, it died. This is the story as seen (and pieced together) my me. 1. The before time When I first discovered the forum, one of it's best features was the full episode downloads. Members of the forum would record them, and upload them within a day of them airing. It was great for people like me who could not watch the show when it aired, or if you lived outside the US and did not get the show on your country's programming. Yes, it was slightly illegal and we all knew it, but we did it for the love of the show. Life was innocent back then... 2. The sh*t hits the fan Well, one day, the forum went offline. In it's place, a message stating that the forum was offline and more details later. Eventually, they created a wordpress blog (now defunct as well, they deleted it) to tell everyone what happened. From what I recall, someone was requesting special privilages from the admins and threatening them with telling Moonscoop about the forum if she didn't get what she wanted. The admins dismissed the threat, but unfortunately, she made good on it. Moonscoop got pissed, and the admins immediately took down the forum to prevent any legal action against them. Here's a pseudo-quote (I can't find the actual text of the blog) of what they said: At the top of every page on the forum this quote appeared: "Can you keep a secret?" All of us kept that secret. All but one, at least. But all it takes is one. To quote yumi, "I knew it was a bad idea letting you into the group!" 3. The fallout So after all this commotion, the admins brought the forum back up (minus the downloads) and told everyone to say their goodbyes. They said that the forum would not be up for long. They even started some final downloads (hosted on external sites) to finish up the season. After the final season of code lyoko ended, they shut down the forum for good. They put up this message: Thanks for visiting Tech Links for the 3 years we were up. We had a good time. Code Lyoko has ended and we don't have enough time to keep up with the forum. Tech Links shutting down will not effect Lyoko Freak. LF will continue to stay up. :) If you need to get in contact with one of the admins, you're welcome to at webmaster[at]teklinks(dot)org. We might write more later or use this blank page to make announcements. Feel free to check back. If you wish to drop us a line, you're welcome to at irc.teklinks.org, #techlinks I do not know if the IRC link or the email address still work or not. This was late 2007 (November or December). Sometime between then and now (January 2009), the site went down completely. When called, it simply returns a blank page. All the quotes I have gathered are from archive.org's wayback machine. They made some vague promises of using the server they had for something else, but it never came to fruition. After some scouting around at the sister site Lyoko Freak, I found this: 6/6/07: Lyoko Freak's New Home Lyoko Freak is now on a different hosting! It is hosted gracefully by Tech Links. We're still settling in and there may be a few bugs here and some dead links there. Please report anything wrong with the website or the forum to me VIA Private Message after 6/8/07(Supossed time on when I will fix everything). Aha! So TL and LF were hosted together. Then there's this: 6/1/08: We moved! The hosting at codexana.net ran up so we moved Lyoko Freak to another server (the same that used to host Tech Links). Site preformance should stay about the same, if not faster. I am not keeping the codexana domain so make sure you don't use that address any longer. Things are likely to be buggy with the site until I update all the links. You can report anything that doesn't work by contacting me on skype: pheadxdll. Thanks for being patient! ~Lyoko Computer So, from what I can tell, the guys at TL got a dedicated server at codexana.net. They hosted TL and LF from it. Around June of 2008, their hosting plan expired and TL went down for good. Note that this is all speculation by me. I can't be sure this is what happened. I looked up the WHOIS for codexana.net, but it was registered privately. Teklinks.org, however, had a few good gems: Domain ID:D127241042-LROR Domain Name:TEKLINKS.ORG Created On:14-Aug-2006 21:47:14 UTC Last Updated On:15-Aug-2008 01:23:29 UTC Expiration Date:14-Aug-2009 21:47:14 UTC Sponsoring Registrar:1 & 1 Internet AG (R73-LROR) Status:OK Registrant ID:SPAG-35788637 Registrant Name:Odd Dellirobbi Registrant Organization:Techlinks Registrant Street1:555 Fake Drive Registrant Street2: Registrant Street3: Registrant City:YigalSucks Registrant State/Province:TX Registrant Postal Code:76226 Registrant Country:US Registrant Phone:+1.555555555555 Registrant Phone Ext.:5 Registrant FAX: Registrant FAX Ext.: Registrant Email:webmaster@phead.us Admin ID:SPAG-35788637 Admin Name:Odd Dellirobbi Admin Organization:Techlinks Admin Street1:555 Fake Drive Admin Street2: Admin Street3: Admin City:YigalSucks Admin State/Province:TX Admin Postal Code:76226 Admin Country:US Admin Phone:+1.555555555555 Admin Phone Ext.:5 Admin FAX: Admin FAX Ext.: Admin Email:webmaster@phead.us Tech ID:SPAG-35788637 Tech Name:Odd Dellirobbi Tech Organization:Techlinks Tech Street1:555 Fake Drive Tech Street2: Tech Street3: Tech City:YigalSucks Tech State/Province:TX Tech Postal Code:76226 Tech Country:US Tech Phone:+1.555555555555 Tech Phone Ext.:5 Tech FAX: Tech FAX Ext.: Tech Email:webmaster@phead.us Name Server:NS51.1AND1.COM Name Server:NS52.1AND1.COM All of the info is fake (except that they used 1 & 1 for hosting), but this leads me to believe that the email address might still work. I am awaiting a reply. The domain is set to expire Aug. 14, 2009. I really hope they renew it. I don't want the last piece of TL to disappear. This is just wild speculation, but I believe that Yigal might be the user that ratted them out. In conclusion, I am sad to see Teklinks disappear. Code Lyoko was (and still is) an awesome show, and TL enabled me to see it to the end. Thank you Teklinks, and rest in peace. Link:
